Criteria for individuals
To assist Rangers, Young Leaders, Leaders, Unit Helpers and Commissioners from all counties and islands to apply for a grant towards the costs of attending trainings and conferences organised either by Girlguiding (eg PR, Membership Systems events) or Girlguiding South West England (eg Walking, TIQ) or a recognised external organisation at a venue recognised and approved by the region.
Only trainings where the participant is either able to gain a recognised qualification or gain personal development in a leadership role will be considered.
How to Apply
Rangers, Young Leaders, Leaders, Unit Helpers and Commissioners who wish to apply for a Leadership and Training grant can download the criteria and application form.
- A grant of up to but not exceeding 33% will be awarded in approved cases after adjusting to take account of any other grants received. The grant will be based on the following costs:
- Travel costs
- Event fee
- Accommodation and food (if it is not included in the event fee). Accommodation may include outdoor or indoor accommodation; for indoor accommodation, the maximum cost allowed will be the cost of a shared room
- Members attending county/island training weekends are excluded from applying for region leadership and training grants.
- Completed application forms should be submitted with a copy of the flyer/notice for the training/event, and/or an invoice/bill showing the cost.
- Grant applications are considered by the Guiding Delivery Committee. They will not normally be considered outside the Committee. The Committee meets 3 times a year – January/February, May, September. It is recommended that applications are submitted to arrive by mid-January, mid-April and mid-August.
- Retrospective grant applications will not normally be considered.

If the applicant is unable to attend the training or event, please notify the region office. The applicant will be asked to return the grant. In exceptional circumstances the repayment of a grant might be waived.
Criteria for Trainers
To pay travel and, if appropriate, accommodation costs for trainers leading trainings in the other counties/islands.
Claims will be considered for island trainers invited to train in one of the mainland counties or one of the other islands and for mainland trainers who are invited to lead trainings in counties/islands that are some distance from their home county.
Please also see the region travel and subsistence policy clause covering accommodation where the individual’s journey time exceeds 5 hours a day.
How to Apply
Trainers who wish to apply for a Leadership and Training grant can download the criteria and application form from the region website or contact Julie at the region office
- Claims of up to 50% of the travel and subsistence costs will be paid on receipt of a completed application form accompanied by a statement from the county hosting the training to a maximum of £200 per trip.
- In some cases it may be appropriate for the county/island hosting the training to submit an application form on behalf of the trainer(s).
- The grant will be based on the following costs:

- Grant applications are considered by the Chief Commissioner/ Chair of Guiding Delivery Committee and reported to the Guiding Delivery Committee.
- It is appreciated that it may not be appropriate for applications to be submitted until after a county/island training has taken place.
