We absolutely LOVE hearing what our members are getting up to, and this story is all about Zara, whose journey with Love Rugby has been truly inspiring.
Zara, from 1st Stratton St Margaret’s Guides, attended a Love Rugby day in Wiltshire North last year, organised by Melanie Ball. Even though none of her fellow Guide friends were interested in going along, Zara decided to attend on her own - and it turned out to be a decision that changed everything.
During the event, coaches from a local rugby team led fun, inclusive sessions for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Between time on the pitch, girls explored rugby from around the world and got creative with a range of activities. For Zara, something really clicked.
She enjoyed the experience so much that she went on to join a local girls’ rugby team - and hasn’t looked back since. Not only has she developed her skills on the pitch, but she’s also been actively involved with it, supporting her team’s campaign for women-only changing facilities.
When tickets became available to watch the Red Roses take on Ireland at Twickenham in April, Zara was one of the very first to secure her place - a testament to her growing passion for the sport.
Since receiving this story, we’ve learned even more about Zara’s journey. On 22 March 2026, she took part in a mini tournament celebrating the opening of a brand-new girls’ changing room at her rugby club. The Roses girls’ team at Swindon Rugby Football Club raised an amazing £4,000 over six months to make this happen, with even the BBC there to capture the moment.
Having a dedicated girls-only space is so important in helping more young people feel confident and supported to take part in sport. We are so proud of Zara, and her team, for not only doing what they love, but for standing up and campaigning for better facilities for girls and women. Read the BBC article here.
Huge thanks to Melanie, of Wiltshire North, for organising the Love Rugby day, and encouraging your girls to try new things. We are so grateful that you sent us your story!
