Every Unit should have a minimum of one Leader with a current 1st Response qualification and it is a requirement for a First Aider to be present at any Guiding activity.  If you are a Leader whose qualification has expired during lockdown, or you are a Leader-in-Training and need 1st Response to complete your Leadership Qualification, help is at hand!

Girlguiding's 1st Response training has had a revamp and when your qualification expires (after three years), you will need to complete the full six hour course again.  This has been broken down into three modules:  Life Support; Trauma and Injury; and Major Illnesses.  There is also an e-learning element which you can access by clicking here.

We are arranging some Region on-line trainings, but these are booking up very quickly so do check with your County/Island to see whether they have trainings available.  You need to complete all three elements of the online trainings, and before booking these your GO record must show that you have completed the Girlguiding e-learning.

To finish your training you are also required to attend a short practical session which you will have to arrange through your County/Island once pandemic restrictions allow.  You will have six months from the date that face-to-face training resumes to complete this.

Your 1st Response training will only be valid once you have completed the e-learning, the three online sessions and the practical element.  The date entered on GO should be the date you complete the last of the online sessions and your training will expire three years from this date, not the date you complete the practical skills check.

If you have received First Aid training externally, for example through your employment, this will be recognised by Girlguiding, but you will need to check that your training covers all the elements of the 1st Response course and you will still have to complete the e-learning - you should do this as quickly as possible if your GO record currently shows you have an external qualification in order to continue as a First Aider with Girlguiding.

Girlguiding have automatically extended by six months on GO any 1st Response qualifications that expired after March 2020 and if yours has run out since 16 March 2020, you can continue to act as a First Aider at a Unit meeting provided you have attended the full six hour virtual training course.
