Events & Training

New Online Events Booking Site

We have launched a new online booking system which will be used for all future Region events and trainings. Ultimately this will be the only way to book places and we believe you will find it much quicker and more secure than sending personal information and payment through the post.

For large-scale events we will continue to offer the opportunity to secure places upon payment of a deposit and to spread the cost with regular instalments. If when making your booking you also pay online, you will receive immediate confirmation that your places have been allocated - an obvious advantage for events where numbers are limited. If you prefer, you will still be able to send a cheque to the office or pay by BACS, but your places will not be allocated until payment has been received. For bookings in respect of the Region Roadshows we will continue to ask that a cheque for £5.00 per person be sent to the Region Office as a returnable deposit. This payment cannot be made online.  For all events and trainings other than the Region Roadshows, you will need to enter a password in order to proceed with your booking. Send an e-mail to julie@ggswe.org.uk giving your name and membership number and we will reply to you with the password.

Please be aware that we will not be offering waiting lists in future, so if you want to be sure of attending an event or training, you will need to act promptly. Don't worry though, if you make a mistake or your numbers change after you have made your original booking, just contact the office and we will sort it for you.

Click here to go to the new online events booking site. The new system is in its infancy so please bear with us over the next few months. If you have any questions or problems, contact Julie Brown on 01722 343180 or e-mail julie@ggswe.org.uk.

Cross Boundary Training

In conjunction with your County/Island Commissioners, the Region has been exploring ways of offering our very busy Leaders more choice and flexibility when looking for training opportunities.

We appreciate how frustrating it can be to have to travel many miles within your own County to attend a training event, when something similar, or indeed, something different, might be on offer a short distance away in another County or Island. With this in mind it has been decided to introduce Cross Boundary Training and you will now have access to a full list of training opportunities which are available to you across the Region. The list will be regularly updated so remember to keep checking it.

If you are responsible for training within your County or Island, please make sure you submit the details to the Region Office using the form we have provided - click here to download. We hope that by opening up your trainings to Region Members outside your immediate County, your will find it easier to fill the places and avoid having to cancel trainings or run these at a loss; and of course, new faces may introduce some new ideas and help encourage cross boundary networking.

Remember that help with the costs associated with attending some trainings is available through the Leadership and Training Grant. Click here for more information.

A Safe Space/New Programme Training 2019

Members at conferenceA Safe Space (ASS) is the revised safeguarding training for all volunteers in Girlguiding. Click here to go to the Girlguiding website and scroll down to see what Level is required for your role. Most Leaders will achieve the training they need by completing e-Learning modules and/or a face-to-face Level 3 training. However, Girlguiding will recognise a previous qualification, professional experience, or external training received in child or adult protection as a replacement for the face-to-face Level 3 training.

Click here for more information on the recognised prior learning and the assessment forms. Please read all the information carefully. Your completed assessment forms, along with certificates for your existing qualifications and prior training, and the certificates to confirm you have completed Modules 1 and 2 of the revised ASS e-Learning, should all be sent to the Region Office for the attention of Julie Brown - e-mail julie@ggswe.org.uk

We have arranged three training dates for 2019 which will cover ASS and New Programme Training. Places will be limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis:

Saturday 5th January 2019, St Brendan's Sixth Form College, Bristol
Saturday 27th April 2019, Sarum Academy, Salisbury
Saturday 8th June 2019, Robert May's School, Odiham

You may attend any of the trainings irrespective of your County, although we would ask that you select the venue which is closest to where you live if possible. You can select just one of the sessions (morning from 10.00am - 1.00pm; afternoon from 2.00pm - 5.00pm), or you can choose to attend both and stay for the day - you will need to bring your own packed lunch.

A Safe Space Level 3 will be open to Commissioners and Unit Leaders who haven't yet attended a Level 3 face-to-face training. Please note that by the compliance deadline of December 2020, one Leader from each unit plus the Going Away With Licence holders require ASS Levels 1, 2 and 3. Leaders in Training who are working on Module 4 of the Leadership Qualification may also attend. This training is not open to Young Leaders.

The New Programme training is open to Commissioners, Unit Leaders, Assistant Leaders, Unit Helpers, Leaders in Training and Young Leaders. It is aimed at volunteers who have not already attended a New Programme training locally and will include an overview of the New Progamme and its component parts including themes, unit meeting activities, skills builders, interest badges and awards, as well as unit programe planning.

There will be no charge for these training events.

Click here to go to the online Events Booking Site to book your place which will require that you enter a password. Send an e-mail to julie@ggswe.org.uk giving your name and membership number and we will reply to you with the password.

E TRAIL 2019

E TRAIL BADGEThis is a new event for Guides aged 12+, Rangers, Young Leaders and Leaders. It will be taking place from Friday 5th July until Sunday 7th July 2019 and will be based at Horner Wood Scout Camp Site which lies within the Exmoor National Park. The event will be fully catered from Saturday breakfast until Sunday lunchtime, but you will need to bring food for Friday evening or eat before arriving, and supply your own tents and camping equipment.

This is a challenge event rather than a walking weekend and we are looking for teams of between four and eight girls and/or adults who will accumulate points by planning routes and visiting checkpoints over the two days. There is no limit to the number of teams a unit can enter, but you will need to observe the normal Girlguiding residential ratios. If you can't make up a team from your own unit, why not contact other units in your area and see whether they would like to form a team with you?

Leaders do not require a Going Away With or walking qualification. Most of Exmoor is Level 1 terrain, and the checkpoint controller on the one section of Level 2 terrain will be a suitably qualified person. First aid cover will be provided by the organisers.

Costing £65.00 per person, places can be secured with a £25.00 deposit per person which is required by 31st March 2019. The balance is payable by 30th April 2019.

We are hoping the weekend will be a great success and will be repeated in the future at other locations with a new badge to collect each time - perhaps the next will be based on Dartmoor and will be the D TRAIL?

Click here to go to the Region's online Events Booking Site where you will find more information and be able to book your places. You will need to enter a password in order to proceed with your booking: Send an e-mail to julie@ggswe.org.uk giving your name and membership number and we will reply with the password.

Royal International Air Tattoo

Red ArrowsWe have once again been invited to join the Royal Air Force for their Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Next year's event will be taking place on Friday 19th July and free places are available to girls from all Sections and their Leaders.

The theme of the 2019 event is 'Space' and the day is aimed at school children and youth groups with the hope of inspiring the next generation of engineers, scientists and aviators. As your girls will be missing a day of school, you will need to seek permission for them to attend from their respective headteachers. However as the event can be classed as an 'educational visit', very few headteachers have refused permission in the past.

Click here for more information and to download the booking form which should be returned to the Royal Air Force as soon as possible and by Friday 10th May 2019 at the latest.

Click here to download an explanatory letter which you can personalise and send to your girls' schools.
