South West Nights Away Badge

Spending nights away on camps and trips has always been a massive part of guiding life. Our Centenary celebrations are giving us more opportunities to have those nights away with our guiding friends, and now there is a badge to celebrate this!
You can gain badges for 1 night away, and keep adding until you get to 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and finally 30 nights. All these badges make up a South West Nights Away star burst.

You need to keep a record of your nights away at a recognised Guiding event on the record card which you can download here, or fill out this order form.

All you need to do is ask an adult at the event to sign your card. When you reach 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 nights away ask your leader to send off for your badge.
You can start counting nights from the Centenary launch on September 5th, so if you’ve already had a Christmas sleepover, get filling in!

Community Heroes at Downing Street

It came as a great surprise to Maureen Cowan, leader with 1st Ulwell Brownies in Dorset, when she was invited to attend a reception for Community Heroes at 10 Downing Street. Maureen writes ...

"The day began on the train when I was met by Tom Lane a youth worker from Weymouth who had also been chosen as a Community Hero. He was an ideal companion who looked after me so well, making sure I was always in the right place. We were met by our MP Jim Knight who took us on a private tour of the Houses of Parliament and then escorted us to Downing Street for the reception. We were presented to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah along with the other recipients of the award.
It was a real privilege to see the inside of No 10. which can only be described as a Tardis. It was a day when we were made to feel so special and I will never forget the wonderful experience. I accepted the award on behalf of my Brownies, both past and present, and the whole District who have been very busy during the last year raising over £130,000 for our new Guide Centre."

Cornish girls choose new 'Guiding Spirit' bulbs

To mark Girlguiding’s centenary, members in Cornwall decided to join forces with Ron Scamp of Quality Daffodils to select their own special bloom and back in March Senior Section girls visited the fields to select their favourite. After viewing the wide selection available, the girls finally chose a beautiful variety which is bright yellow and has a double crinkled centre.
A county-wide competition to choose the name was won by ‘Guiding Spirit’ and that name has been granted a Certificate of Registration by the Royal Horticultural Society.
On 19 September members of all ages planted 50 of their special bulbs at the entrance to Trelissick Gardens (NT) and shortly other members will plant more at The Mount Edgcumbe Hospice.
Only 100 special Centenary bulbs will be planted this year but from March 2010 the variety will be available for anyone to buy from Mr Scamp.
