Events & Training

Cross Boundary Training

In conjunction with your County/Island Commissioners, the Region has been exploring ways of offering our very busy Leaders more choice and flexibility when looking for training opportunities.

We appreciate how frustrating it can be to have to travel many miles within your own County to attend a training event, when something similar, or indeed, something different, might be on offer a short distance away in another County or Island. With this in mind it has been decided to introduce Cross Boundary Training and you will now have access to a full list of training opportunities which are available to you across the Region. The list will be regularly updated so remember to keep checking it.

If you are responsible for training within your County or Island, please make sure you submit the details to the Region Office using the form we have provided - click here to download. We hope that by opening up your trainings to Region Members outside your immediate County, your will find it easier to fill the places and avoid having to cancel trainings or run these at a loss; and of course, new faces may introduce some new ideas and help encourage cross boundary networking.

Remember that help with the costs associated with attending some trainings is available through the Leadership and Training Grant. Click here for more information.

A Safe Space Training

A Safe Space (ASS) is the revised safeguarding training for all volunteers in Girlguiding. Each Unit is required to have at least one Unit Leader who has completed up to Level 3 of the ASS training which focuses on the safeguarding element. Most Leaders will achieve this by completing the revised Module 3 e-Learning and attending a face-to-face Level 3 training. However, Girlguiding will recognise a previous qualification, professional experience, or external training received in child or adult protection as a replacement for the face-to-face Level 3 training.

Click here for more information on the recognised prior learning and the assessment forms. Please read all the information carefully. Your completed assessment forms, along with certificates for your existing qualifications and prior training, and the certificates to confirm you have completed Modules 1 - 3 of the revised ASS e-Learning, should all be sent to the Region Office for the attention of Julie Brown - e-mail

If you are the main contact in your Unit and have not received information regarding the ASS training which is taking place across the Region in 2018, please e-mail

If you are not attached to a Unit but are responsible for running residentials, you will need to book a place on one of the training dates. Please download the information below.

Try, Inspire, Qualify - Foxlease, Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd September 2018

Try, Inspire, Qualify LogoTry, Inspire, Qualify will be back at Foxlease for the weekend of Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd September 2018. Leaders may join us for the whole weekend with the option of either staying on site or travelling to Foxlease daily, or you can come along for one day, a half day, or for particular sessions, with activities starting from just £5.00! This year the Day Visitor option is also open to Senior Section, including Members aged under 18 if they are accompanied by a Leader. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so we would urge you to book early!

Our first Try, Inspire, Qualify weekend in October 2016 was a great success with over 60 Leaders attending a weekend of activities, training opportunities and assessments. Many went home with new qualifications including the Archery GB Instructor Award, CIEH Level 2 Food Safety, and boating awards. One of those who gained the Core Coach Fencing qualification was Rosie Gitsham from Devon. Her County received equipment worth £500 from British Fencing for Rosie to use to train others, and Rosie sent the following letter to her County:

"I have just returned from a fun-filled weekend at Try, Inspire, Qualify at Foxlease. I am writing to thank you Devon County for providing £60.00 towards this weekend. I passed the British Fencing Qualification and am now able to offer fencing sessions to Guide and Senior Section Units. Once the fencing equipment and coaching booklet has arrived I will be able to start offering sessions.

"During the weekend I challenged myself on the high ropes and climbing wall and tried whittling for the first time. I also listened to storytelling and went to a campfire. It was a lovely and relaxed weekend where some people tried new activities, others qualified and some did both. It was good to see Guiders I recognised from past events and meet Guiders from across the South West Region. This was one of my favourite 'training' weekends. I hope that Try, Inspire, Qualify becomes an annual event to allow more Guiders from Devon to try activities and gain a qualification."

If you have completed your Leadership Qualification in the past few years, you will have received an information pack from Girlguiding including a £25.00 voucher to be used at Girlguiding's Training and Activity Centres. We are now able to accept these as payment towards Try, Inspire, Qualify! Simply complete the voucher and return to us with your booking form. You can also apply for a Leadership and Training Grant to help with costs - click here. You may also find that your local County/Island, Division or District might be prepared to finance part of your attendance if you intend gaining a qualification which would benefit members in your local area.

Click here to download the Booking Form if you are an adult Member and would like to attend for the whole weekend.
