The Level 1 Training Course is aimed at those wishing to gain or extend their existing walking skills and the confidence to lead groups safely in normal lowland country. The course doesn't assume any existing skills or knowledge and will include both short theory and practical outdoor sessions plus a half-day walk on both Saturday and Sunday; the emphasis will be on learning by doing, supported by experienced and friendly trainers. Also available is a Leisure Walking Weekend which will provide an opportunity to gain further lowland walking experience, to complete a Level 1 logbook walk or simply explore a new area and enjoy a walk in the Gloucestershire countryside.

Accommodation will be in Deer House at Deer Park, Girlguiding Gloucestershire's Training & Activity Centre which is near Cheltenham. Leadership Qualification Day

All our Members who are in the process of gaining the Leadership Qualification have been invited to attend a Leadership Qualification Day on Saturday 5th May 2018 at Huish Episcopi Academy, in Langport, Somerset. You will have the opportunity to complete various sections of the Qualification, to have other parts of your Qualification signed off, or to meet with a Mentor and have a chat about your progress.

The day will cost £10.00 per head to include lunch and refreshments. If you have not received your invitation, please e-mail julie@ggswe.org.uk .

Mentors: Please encourage your Leaders in Training to attend and to book early.

The following is a write-up and feedback from our first Leadership Qualification Day...

“A fantastic event, very well organised, helpful and useful.  I enjoyed the day and getting to meet fellow Guiders very much.  I have some new ideas to take back to my Unit.  Thank you!”

Our first Leadership Qualification Day was held at Burgate School in Hampshire on Saturday 29th April 2017 and proved to be a great success with almost every County/Island across the Region being represented.  Approximately 130 Leaders in Training attended a range of workshops which they had chosen in order to complete missing modules from their Leadership Qualification.  They also had the opportunity to meet with Mentors and to have previously completed clauses signed off, and to get answers to any questions they had relating to the qualification process and the role of Mentors.

“…can now complete my Leadership Qualification fairly easily as [I] think [I] just need to gather my evidence and then try find out who my Mentor is and how it works in my District.  Thanks again [for] a great informative day – having Mentors there plus sections was a great combination.”

“Although I had nearly finished my Leadership Qualification, it confirmed what I was doing was correct.  During lunch, although I could not have any modules signed off, I was able to have my folder looked through and [be] given advice on whether I had to add any more information.”

“Really helpful to be able to talk to a Mentor and get big chunks of the training signed off and to check that the evidence I had was enough.”

Mentor and Leader in TrainingWhilst it was fantastic to hear of one Leader in Training who had 30 clauses signed off in the one day, and another who after five years was finally able to go away needing only the final sign off from her County, it was worrying to discover that we have willing volunteers out there who are still striving to complete their Leadership Qualification without the support of existing volunteers within their Counties.  The Mentors who attended found the day “very insightful” and a useful indicator of how mentoring is working in some areas and not others.

There was a friendly and positive atmosphere to the whole day and several of those who attended have commented that they felt very “comfortable” to be there.  The day began with coffee and delicious cakes and the opportunity to find out more about the resources, badges and goodies on offer from the Region Shop, as well as the Bournemouth Guide Shop.  Sarah Wheeler and Liz Brown introduced the event, explaining how it had come about and what it was hoped would be achieved, and it was then down to business with a break for lunch which provided an opportunity to make new friends and share ideas and experiences.

“Really great day, very helpful, trainers were really informed and provided quality and useful advice and information to further my knowledge and experience [in] running a Brownie Unit.”

“The whole day was really well organised, everyone was friendly and sessions were excellent….  The sessions flew by and I knew that everything that was being taught to us was useful.  I have been… updating my accounts, sending a letter with branding, contacting the other Unit Helpers about exciting badges and topics to discuss at our next meeting and messaging new contacts I met….  I am a new Unit Leader in Training that unexpectedly took over a Rainbows group and I feel soo [sic] much more confident after today.”

A Safe Space Training - Recognised Prior Learning

Leaders' trainingA Safe Space (ASS) is the revised safeguarding training for all volunteers in Girlguiding. Each Unit is required to have at least one Unit Leader who has completed up to Level 3 of the ASS training which focuses on the safeguarding element. Most Leaders will achieve this by completing the revised Module 3 e-Learning and attending a face-to-face Level 3 training. However, Girlguiding will recognise a previous qualification, professional experience, or external training received in child or adult protection as a replacement for the face-to-face Level 3 training.

Click here to go to the Girlguiding Website for more information on the recognised prior learning and the assessment forms. Please read all the information carefully. Your completed assessment forms, along with certificates for your existing qualifications and prior training, and the certificates to confirm you have completed Modules 1 - 3 of the revised ASS e-Learning, should all be sent to the Region Office for the attention of Julie Brown - e-mail julie@ggswe.org.uk.

If you are the main contact in your Unit and have not received information regarding the ASS training which is taking place across the Region in 2018, please e-mail julie@ggswe.org.uk.

If you are not attached to a Unit but are responsible for running residentials, you will need to book a place on one of the training dates. Please download the information below.

Cross Boundary Training

Adult Members chattingIn conjunction with your County/Island Commissioners, the Region has been exploring ways of offering our very busy Leaders more choice and flexibility when looking for training opportunities.

We appreciate how frustrating it can be to have to travel many miles within your own County to attend a training event, when something similar, or indeed, something different, might be on offer a short distance away in another County or Island. With this in mind it has been decided to introduce Cross Boundary Training and you will now have access to a full list of training opportunities which are available to you across the Region. The list will be regularly updated so remember to keep checking it.

If you are responsible for training within your County or Island, please make sure you submit the details to the Region Office using the form we have provided - click here to download. We hope that by opening up your trainings to Region Members outside your immediate County, your will find it easier to fill the places and avoid having to cancel trainings or run these at a loss; and of course, new faces may introduce some new ideas and help encourage cross boundary networking.

Remember that help with the costs associated with attending some trainings is available through the Leadership and Training Grant. Click here for more information.

Try, Inspire, Qualify - Foxlease, Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd September 2018

Try, Inspire, Qualify LogoTry, Inspire, Qualify will be back at Foxlease for the weekend of Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd September 2018. Leaders may join us for the whole weekend with the option of either staying on site or travelling to Foxlease daily, or you can come along for one day, a half day, or for particular sessions, with activities starting from just £5.00! This year the Day Visitor option is also open to Senior Section, including Members aged under 18 if they are accompanied by a Leader. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so we would urge you to book early!

Our first Try, Inspire, Qualify weekend in October 2016 was a great success with over 60 Leaders attending a weekend of activities, training opportunities and assessments. Many went home with new qualifications including the Archery GB Instructor Award, CIEH Level 2 Food Safety, and boating awards. One of those who gained the Core Coach Fencing qualification was Rosie Gitsham from Devon. Her County received equipment worth £500 from British Fencing for Rosie to use to train others, and Rosie sent the following letter to her County:

"I have just returned from a fun-filled weekend at Try, Inspire, Qualify at Foxlease. I am writing to thank you Devon County for providing £60.00 towards this weekend. I passed the British Fencing Qualification and am now able to offer fencing sessions to Guide and Senior Section Units. Once the fencing equipment and coaching booklet has arrived I will be able to start offering sessions.

"During the weekend I challenged myself on the high ropes and climbing wall and tried whittling for the first time. I also listened to storytelling and went to a campfire. It was a lovely and relaxed weekend where some people tried new activities, others qualified and some did both. It was good to see Guiders I recognised from past events and meet Guiders from across the South West Region. This was one of my favourite 'training' weekends. I hope that Try, Inspire, Qualify becomes an annual event to allow more Guiders from Devon to try activities and gain a qualification."
